Microgreens The Super Vegetable, How to Grow Microgreens

Since the introduction in the 1980s microgreens have steadily gained popularity. These aromatic greens, also know as micro herbs or vegetable confetti, are rich in flavor and add color to a variety of dishes. Even with such small size they pack a huge nutritional punch. Microgreens tend to have a much higher nutritional value compared to mature vegetables.  What are microgreens they are young vegetables approximately 1-3 inches tall.  Microgreens are grown for 7-21 days after germination. Generally cut once the plants first true leaves have emerged. One of the nice things about microgreens is you can buy them whole and cut fresh as you need them.  They are fairly easy to grow you just need a few items and a little time. We grow them in nursery trays using coco core as a growing medium.  I generally buy bulk seeds online $18 to $23 per pound. One pound of seed will plant 5 + trays. The coco core needs to be damp when you plant the seed and sprayed twice a day. I found the thicker the coco core is the better to keep the seeds damp. when planting just sprinkle a layer of seeds on top of the coco core no need to cover with coco core. I plant a lot of seeds because they are small when cut.  Some people say plant 6 to 12 seeds per square inch.  We just sprinkle a lot and make sure they are not layered.  Put a flat on top of the seeds to cover and put a weight in the tray this will push the seeds in, after two days remove weighted tray exposing microgreen to light put in low light increase light level after a few day.  We spray water on them every morning and night with a sprayer do not soak them they will rot. You can cut when you like. Some people let them regrow several times, but they stink to much when growing inside your house. Good luck and enjoy
